This travel post is about my recent visit to Shanklin on the Isle of Wight on a cold December’s day.
We got up early and due to the wonderful island bus network, we were soon heading towards Shanklin. We were dropped off outside Shanklin train station, and waited a few minutes for the café opposite to open. Once the wonderful breakfast of mushrooms on toast was devoured, and the coffee was drunk, it was time to head out into the cold.
As some shops began to open, we popped in and picked up a few goods, and then slowly strolled to Shanklin Old Village. The thatched cottages, winding roads and fresh air, was medicine revitalising our souls.
We strolled alongside the Shanklin Chine, and enjoyed an impressive seafront view, and then taking our time and being careful, walked down steps and a sloping path to the seafront. We couldn’t resist walking into the incredible ‘Steamer Inn’ located on the seafront, and enjoyed the warmth as well as tea and coffee.
As we sat in the warmth, we watched rowing crews practising out on the sea.
Loathed to depart, we somehow got up the willpower to leave the pub, and walk back up to the village. Before we left we popped into a shop, and brought some local produce such as mustards and jams. We had a lovely chat with the shop assistant, and then afterwards a short stroll to the bus stop, and soon we were heading onto our next destination.
