If there is ever any doubt about whether a trip to Arundel Castle in England UK is worthy of your time, then that doubt will surely evaporate upon seeing the outside of the Castle, let alone once you have set foot through the magnificent gateway to its grounds.

The weather on the day of my visit to this west Sussex Castle was mixed, but it soon brightened up. We parked in a car park just across the road to the entrance, and ate our lunch sat upon a tree trunk, near to the river. Once our energy levels had been topped up, it was time to venture inside this historic and magnificent British castle.

Arundel Castle and its grounds do not do small. Small is not a word that you can associate with this UK destination. Now ‘Grand’ with a capital ‘G’ is a word you can surely associate with the historic site, both inside and out. This English castle dates back to 1067, and over the centuries it has altered and expanded on an impressive scale.

The Castle and its grounds are well maintained, with good facilities, including an area to eat outdoors, and it will take you hours to properly explore, absorb and take in the location.

As I look through the photos I took from the day, I realise there are too many great photos to share in this blog post, even in the gallery at the bottom of this page. Too many great settings to take in, all within the grounds, let alone inside the main areas. Alas I couldn’t take any photos inside the main buildings, as you are not allowed, which is a shame.

So let’s continue from when I strolled into the Castle grounds. After you have brought your ticket, you round a bend and then it hits you, with a historic force of scale that is overwhelming. How did I not know about this place sooner? We then spent a considerable amount of time exploring the Castle grounds, which included a Chapel, gardens, and fruit and veg area amongst other areas to visit.

Arundel Castle is a place that captures the imagination, as was apparent from the small children dressed up as Medieval kings and queens! However you don’t have to be a child, to have your imagination run wild at such a destination!

I was impressed by how well-maintained the Castle is. You don’t set foot inside and quickly find yourself back out, as there is much to see, dating back over centuries. I especially enjoyed climbing the ancient steps, and looking out across the landscape, at the same spot where guards did back in the Medieval period.

Without doubt this is a visit which does need good weather, or least allows you an hour or two outdoors to wander. Inside there is a tremendous amount to see, and when you need a break the hot chocolate in their small café is rather good as well!

I’m definitely going to return to Arundel and its Castle one day.
