Book Review: A Study in Scarlet – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

A Study in Scarlet

You might of heard of Sherlock Holmes perhaps? Seen a movie, watched a television show? If you’ve never read one of the books though, this is where to begin. Find out how Dr Watson and Sherlock met, moved into their lodgings at 221B Baker St. and how the ball got rolling. It is a must have read for anyone looking to explore the books.

The writing is top notch, a standard all too often lacking today. The book covers just one detective case, but the surrounding stories, background detail and writing kept me glued to the pages.

Follow the case from London, to a storyline set abroad (America) and back. Watch how Sherlock uses his unorthodox skills to find the clues, create new lines of enquiry, pursue the facts and side stepping what others deem obvious, yet lack foundation.

The book covers betrayal, love, religion, murder and more. The settings so well written, that my mind didn’t hesitate to imagine the scenes, stand there as an observer and flow from one setting to the next, without hesitation. Gripped by not just wanting to know the outcome, but how, why and in what manner Sherlock would pursue the case. Enjoying every paragraph, every detail along the way.  Not my first time reading this story, but still a delight.

No wonder Sir Athur Conan Doyle’s creation still holds strong with society.
