Book Review: The Science of Discworld II The Globe – Terry Pratchett

3 Small Candles

Also this book was co-written with science writers Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen.

I’m a huge Discworld fan, but this wasn’t always the case. I met Terry Pratchett once at a book signing. I had gone along to get a book signed for my sisters birthday present. Standing there in the queue I saw the fanatics and was amazed. The t-shirts, the joy of being there and a few too many books under their arms waiting to be signed. I met Terry with my one book, thought he was a nice chap and went on my way.

A year later I had devoured much of the discworld series and to this very day it is the only fantasy author I will read. The world he has created, carried by elephants on the back of the turtle has drawn me in. I have become a fanatic.

This particular book I’m reviewing was released in 2002. Its main characters the wizards of Unseen University who usually prefer the long lunches and the desserts trolley, now forced into action to protect the universe they created, which just so happens to contain Earth and was sitting on a shelf.

They must visit Earth to save humanity (once again) and battle the enemy, using time travel, tactics and a suitcase with multiple feet and a life of its own!

The science of discworld books contain two parts. Every other chapter is about a topic, which the story ties into. In this case the evolution and development of the human mind, art, culture etc. Unlike its predecessor, I decided to skip that part!! Don’t get me wrong I’m sure it would of enriched the story and my knowledge, but quite honestly I just wanted to read a story about the wizards and nothing more.

For which I was vastly rewarded with a fun tale as good as any other discworld story involving the Wizards of Unseen University. Each wizard bringing his unique character to the adventure. So whereas I can’t comment on the non-story aspect, I can recommend the story.

A must read for any discworld fan.
