How to make homemade oven chips

Be warned this is my first attempt at homemade oven chips and I know there is room for improvement. I might not even stick to this method of making them, but for now I will and they did taste very nice.

It was a bit akin to having sliced roast potatoes and I made a fatal mistake of not turning them halfway through cooking, which although didn’t result in burning, meant they could of been cooked better. Anyhow here is my first attempt.

Ingredients
– Potatoes (three large ones for two people)
– Sea salt
– Olive oil or Rice Bran Oil

You need

– Large oven tray
– Large mixing bowl
– Chopping board etc.
– Large saucepan etc.
– Colander (drainer).
– Cooking utensils

Step 1 – You can either peel your potatoes or create chips with skins on. I peeled them and then cut into chip shape chunks. Then place into your large saucepan add sea salt (I shook the small sea salt container six times) and then boil.

Step 2 – Drain the potatoes and then place them in your large mixing bowl. Add a generous portion of oil and gentle mix the potatoes using a wooden spoon until they are all covered.

Step 3 – Place them on a baking tray and cook for 35 – 45 minutes on gas mark 6 (200 degrees celsius). Halfway through cooking take them out of the oven and turn.

Now chips as you know can be served with numerous items. When I cooked these homemade chips they accompanied vegetarian sausages in onion baguettes. A great combination. My first attempt wasn’t a complete success as I mentioned at the beginning and yes you will notice I covered in tomato sauce (!), but they did taste great. Hopefully next time I improve my homemade oven chips.

  1. I suppose you could add herbs or spices to home made chips. Or glaze them to make them super posh.

My Nan makes home made chips the way you have described. Sometimes she adds some garlic salt or Aromat (?? that yummy yellow salt) – and soooooometimes, Paprika!

I suppose it’s trial and error when you’re trying to jazz things up.

  2. Hi Becky,

Great suggestions on how to ‘spice’ up the homemade chips. Enjoyed making them and will definitely do so again, so might add one of your suggestions.

    Cheers for leaving a comment.

    All the best

  4. Hi Tracey,

I’m the same, I love finding new ways to work with potatoes. I’m also keen to cook more with lentils, not just a soup. Something I must do soon.

Thanks your lovely words, much appreciated. 🙂

Only problem is…I now feel like making homemade potatoes tonight and we have none!

    All the best

  5. I started that way and enjoy them so much,
but i cut mine into chunky chips into the colanders – water them , shake off excess water then add salt and paprika – shake again

I cut out the boiling process but do them in the oven for 30 – 35 minutes, it makes them morish and more filling, works well with roasties and also vegetables

  6. hi i make chips and wedges all the time and i find that they tast better if when you chop them up add some olive oil and salt and pepper and some paprika or chili they tast brill! but they dont taste spicy . just a little tip x
