We have an old sewing box full of needles and thread. It lives in our hallway on a shelve. Twenty years ago it lived on another shelve, this time in one of my grandmothers houses. Now the cotton reels are a mixture of ours and hers, the same for the needles. One generation passing an item on to the next.
The sewing box is just one item of many being passed through the lines, an item that links you to a person. I think this form of inheritance is second only to knowledge and attitude. How your elders can impact the way you live your life, then, today and tomorrow.
When I look at this box I think of my grandmother, whose sewing box it was, memories bubble to the surface and the sewing box is more than just an item, it is a connection.
Writing this post I can picture a younger Andrew sitting in her kitchen, chatting to her and her smiling at me, listening and engaging me in conversation. A different century and time, yet all these years later her influence is still living on, not just needle and thread, but so much more.
This post could of been about other items passed down the generations, but it was about the sewing box.
That’s a lovely story Andrew.
I think any special item, like your sewing box, is cherished for a complex collection of reasons – often those items become more important over the years, not because of what they are, but because of the memories they contain.
Cheers Tracey your absolutely right and well said. 🙂
