It all started twenty-two years ago when I brought a Washington Redskins hot drink mug whilst on holiday in America. This huge plastic mug kept my drinks warmer and gave me far too generous helpings of tea, coffee and hot chocolate.
Then when I was doing a train commute from Winchester eight years ago we brought a travel mug. Essentially the same principle as the Redskins mug, but with a lid to keep me from sloshing and spilling my drink everywhere. I used to walk to the train station and whilst everyone was queuing for their hot drinks, I would put my money down for my newspaper and go wait for the train, enjoying my cheap drink, especially on a Winter’s morning.
The same applied when I started commuting from the Isle of Wight to Winchester. Strolling down a pier at five something every morning, a travel mug in hand. I’ve owned a fair few travel mugs over the years.
Now my wonderful girlfriend has just brought me another travel mug replacement. This time for when I’m working during the day. It allows my tea to stew longer and when I’m ‘in the zone’ writing, I don’t have to worry as much about my drinks going cold.
Travel mugs have saved me a fortune in coffee and tea purchases, which I will admit I’ve brought all too often in the past, but less so thanks to travel mugs.
So this blog post isn’t exactly a thrill a sentence, a wow a paragraph and a cor blimey guv that is useful info.
Yet it makes me think how much money I saved by getting hooked on that Washington Redskins mug twenty-two years ago. How much money we spend each week that does not add to the quality of life, and how a change that could appear minor, is in fact a change that saved thousands of pounds over the years…. oh sometimes those changes can keep my drink warm.
I salute you travel mugs.
Travel mugs are great! Though admittedly I often forget to use mine … hopefully I’ll now remember to use it tomorrow! 🙂
I love travel mugs, I use mine daily even when not traveling! 🙂 Hope you remember yours tomorrow / today and cheers for leaving a reply.
What a great way to keep memories-to bring a Travel mug from a holiday!!:) How many have you got already?? I am more the clothes type of collector. I love buying clothes in holidays and everytime I wear them at home my thoughts are off to this specific holiday…awesome!!:)

Hi Linn,
Alas I only have two travel mugs now. They tend to wear out.
I must buy clothes on holiday! Sounds good. I tend to only when I’ve not packed enough!
Cheers for leaving the reply.
All the best
